APA Citation Guide

American Psychological Association (APA) style is commonly used for citing references in science and social science courses, such as Psychology and Social Work.This guide is based on the APA Manual (7th ed.).

Image or Artwork

In Person: 

Artist, A. (Year). Title of work [Format]. Location. 

Example: Wyeth, A. (1948). Christina's world [Painting]. New York, NY: Museum of Modern Art. 

From a website: 

Artist, A. (Year). Title of work [Format]. Retrieved from URL. 

Example: Wyeth, A. (1948). Christina's world [Painting]. Retrieved from http://www.moma.org/explore/collection/index 

Note: Use this same format to cite pictures you find online.  

Motion picture or video recording

Name of person. (His or her role: producer, director, writer). (Year of production). Title followed by

[Motion picture]. Country of production: Name of movie studio.

Example:   Scorcese, J. (Producer), & Lonergan, K. (Writer/Director). (2000). You can count on me

[Motion picture]. United States: Paramount Pictures.

Cited in text:   (Scorcese, 2000)

 

Television show from a series

Name of person. (His or her role: producer, director, writer). (Year, air date). Title of episode [Television

series episode]. In names of executive producers, title of series. Place of production: Name of

network. 

Example: Whedon, J. (Director/Writer). (1999, December 14). Hush [Television series episode]. In

Whedon, J., Berman, G., Gallin, S., Kuzui, F., & Kuzui, K. (Executive Producers),

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Burbank, CA: Warner Bros.

Cited in text: (Whedon, 1999)

Televison Broadcast

Name of person. (His or her role: executive producer, producer, director, writer). (Date of production

      showing Year, Month date). Title of show followed by [Television broadcast]. City or Cities of

      production: Network name.

Example:   Crystal, L. (Executive Producer). (1993, October 11). The MacNeil/Lehrer news hour

                     [Television broadcast]. New York and Washington, DC: Public Broadcasting Service.

Cited in text: (Crystal, 1993)

Music Recording

Name of writer. (Year of copyright). Title of song [Recorded by artist if different from writer]. On

   Title of Album [Medium of recording: CD, Record, Cassette, etc.]. Location: Label. (Recording date

   if different from copyright date).

Example:  Schocked, M. (1992). Over the waterfall. On Arkansas traveler [CD]. New York: Polygram

                     Music. 

Goodenough, J.B. (1982). Tails and trotters [Recorded by G. Box, A. Mayo, & E.

          Trickett]. On And so will we yet [CD]. Sharon, CT: Folk-Legacy Records. (1990)

Cited in text:   (Schocked, 1992, track 5)

YouTube video

Author or compiler name. (Date showing year, month date). Title of video. Retrieved Month date,

        year, from url.
