Visual & Performing Arts and Music: Print Journals (JCSU Holdings)

Overview and Policy

  1. The James B. Duke Memorial Library retains the current and previous year print periodicals that the library subscribes to. 
  2. In order to provide students, faculty, and staff with access to the library’s collections, all serials are to be used in-house only.  
  3. Periodicals may be found on the first floor of the library; there are some periodicals that are held at the Center of Information and may be borrowed for in-library use.
  4. Under no circumstances are current periodicals allowed to be checked out.
  5. If any faculty member needs serials for instructional purposes, they must make copies and place them on reserve with the Electronic Resources Librarian. Please allow 24-48 hour to process.

JOURNAL FINDER

Print Journals for VPA and Music (JCSU HOLDINGS)

African Arts: Published quarterly by the James S. Coleman African Studies Center at UCLA International Institute, the journal shares research on traditional, contemporary, and popular African arts and cultures.

The Art Bulletin: Published quarterly by Taylor & Francis Group for the College Art Association and concentrates on art history in various institutions. Articles published in this publication go through a scholarly peer-reviewed process. 

Art in America:  A monthly publication that focuses on contemporary art in the United States.

Art Journal: Published quarterly by Taylor & Francis Group for the College Art Association. This is a peer-reviewed journal for the arts that explore relationships among diverse forms of art practice and production, art making, art history, visual studies, theory, and criticism. 

Callaloo: Published five times a year and focuses on creative works and studies by black writers from around the world. 

Choral Journal: This international journal of the American Choral Directors Association is published monthly except in July. The journal features scholarly peer-reviewed articles, editorials, book reviews, recorded sound, choral works, and columns of practical advice and ideas for choral conductors.

Dance Magazine:  Published monthly by DanceMedia, Dance Magazine provides insightful information to the dance community. It is a recognizable source for everything dance related.

Dance Teacher: Offers useful ideas that will help dance teachers and their students master the art of dance and become better dancers.

Downbeat: An American magazine dedicated to covering Jazz & Blues and as of late has been expanding beyond the genre.

The Instrumentalist:  A magazine for music educators that provide practical information and innovative ideas for band directors and focuses on orchestras, performing artists, composers, and scholastic bands.

JOPERD (Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance): A peer-reviewed monthly journal published by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America). The journal provides information on a variety of physical education, recreation, health, and dance issues; thus supporting all areas related to achieving a healthy lifestyle.  

School Arts: An international magazine dedicated to the promotion of excellence, advocacy, and professional support for visual arts educators.
